Social media sites, like tumblr, youtube, facebook, etc, have proven to be a great place for transgender individuals to gain support from others in the community. The question is, are parents finding the same support?
Many people ask me for advice when coming out to parents, one of the first things I typically say is whatever their reaction, understand that they will be going through their own coming out process too, they are going from a parent to what they viewed as a daughter or son to either the opposite or somewhere else on the spectrum of gender identity and expression. It is a process for parents just like it is for the person who is going on this journey. Some react in a more positive way, others struggle, and then sadly there is a percentage who can’t make the transition with their child.
If you have a parent who is seeking support or struggling to find connection with others, I strongly recommend having them read this article: Once a Daughter, Now a Son: The Mother of a Transgender Child Shares Her Emotional Transition The mother who wrote this article shows her own process, her own grief, but ultimately her acceptance and love for her child.
