You go, Ellen.
Check out the link to see Ellen’s response to this group that wanted her removed as the new JC Penny spokesperson. I love her quote, “Haters are my motivators.” I also love the fact that recently it seems that LGBT individuals and women’s health has had an upswing of attacks (I partly blame the upcoming election on this, but we all know this is nothing new). What is new, is the growing support from the mass population, allies and people in the communities being attacked. The more vocal we all get, the weaker we are going to make groups and individuals that want to spread hate. Keep strong, keep vocal, and also, don’t forget the power of humor.
I remember in 1997 when her TV show, Ellen was canceled after she came out as gay due to the fear that the network would lose advertising dollars and viewers. She was brave back then to come out (when others were still staying quiet). I feel she was one of the pioneers in opening up opportunities for LGBT people in film and TV who could be out and not talk about “roommates,” being “single” or having a friend of the other sex as their date at award shows.
