Ryan Sallans, activist and author, transitioned from female to male in 2005 and has recounted his life experiences in his newly released memoir, Second Son: Transitioning Toward My Destiny, Love and Life.

Since he began he has been committed to education surrounding medical, legal and social issues related to the transgender community. Shay O’Reilly, a local transgender man and former University of Iowa student, said he filed a complaint with state officials last week after he was initially denied medical care because he’s transgender.

I would love to be put in contact with the University of Iowa to offer training on transgender healthcare. To say that providers won’t touch this area “with a 10 foot pole” is ridiculous. The resources, medical protocol, and provider support is out there. 

I am proud of Shay for taken a stance and trying to raise more awareness after his experience. His decision to move forward with a complaint is a way to move UI toward trans-inclusive care. 

I will be following this story closely and also plan on writing a letter to U of I.
