Ryan Sallans, activist and author, transitioned from female to male in 2005 and has recounted his life experiences in his newly released memoir, Second Son: Transitioning Toward My Destiny, Love and Life.

Since he began he has been committed to education surrounding medical, legal and social issues related to the transgender community. This blog serves as a guide and resource for individuals seeking guidance in the transgender community or for friends, family, lovers and partners who are eager to learn more about how a transition may impact the individual's life and those around them.

For LGBTQ-Identified Middle and High School Students

The school year is quickly approaching and there may be concerns or worries about how you will be treated, both by teachers and peers. The guide Beyond the Binary (developed by Gay-Straight Alliance Network, Transgender Law Center & National Center for Lesbian Rights) may be helpful for you. It gives you answers to terminology and action steps/ideas on how to report harassment or bullying. It also gives you worksheets when trying to start programs at your school that recognize diversity. Yes, it is more focused on gender non-conforming and transgender students, but I think it can be helpful for all.

If you have a teacher or counselor that is also wanting to do more in your school, pass this on to them.
