As one of its provisions to be implemented by January 2014, the Affordable Care Act prohibits insurers from discriminating against or charging higher rates for any person based on gender.

More information from the Health and Human Services Department regarding protections for transgender individuals under the Affordable Care Act. What this means according to Mara Keisling is, “that HHS will accept complaints from people who are discriminated against while receiving federal health care money.”

I decided to highlight this quote from the article to note that the provisions will not be implemented fully until Jan. 2014…so what does this mean? If you are able to vote, know that we may lose the Affordable Care Act and its provisions if Obama is not re-elected to office. There is no telling what would happen to the LGBTQ community as a whole if Romney was elected. 

I have to admit that I loathe following politics, but it has become part of my full-time job because the games and money used to institute power and control directly affect the health and well-being of us all. It saddens me to know that our lives are used as little chest pieces for politicians and corporations to capitalize on their own self-serving interests. 

So, I again digressed a bit from the article, but I feel that we all need to be involved and aware of what could happen to our future.
