These are great questions and are things I think we all should consider even if we aren’t going on hormones. All of us should be aware of our family health history and then look at our own health behaviors and medications. I know in my family there can be a risk for high blood pressure and dementia….otherwise my families live pretty long and healthy lives.
When one goes on testosterone, they will see their HDL “good cholesterol” go down and their LDL “bad cholesterol” go up. This is one factor that can increase cardiovascular problems as we age. Another factor to consider is that testosterone increases the amount of red blood cells produced…too many of these can create sludgy blood and cause problems with our heart.
For these reasons, and many more, it is important to follow the doctor’s orders when on testosterone. Drink in moderation, don’t smoke, exercise, eat fruit/veggies/lean meats, don’t inject more than what is prescribed and go back for blood draws when ordered.
I have been on testosterone for almost seven years and am in good health (well besides allergies). We unfortunately don’t have any long term studies to show the affects of testosterone on a trans man’s body over time, however, the men I know who have been on for 15, 20 or more years are still doing great.
In all reality, if being on T shortens my life, I’d rather live a shorter life in a happier state of mind and more comfortable body, then live in discomfort.
Hope this helps.
Boulder Valley Women’s Health in Boulder, Colorado will now offer transgender healthcare services! Last year I worked with Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains in Denver who also provide transgender healthcare services. So for people in Colorado, you now have at least two non-profits to help assists you with your medical treatment needs. One of the reasons I continue to work with and promote receiving services at non-profit healthcare organizations is they are more affordable! Lab fees alone can break the bank but many nonprofits charge very reasonable fees for these services.
