This mountain in support of marriage equality is just going to keep growing. Read about this chart and senators support of marriage equality here.

Today marriage equality became the law in the state of Washington. Congrats to everyone that lives there. For those of us in states that still discriminate, continue to advocate for equality. This past election is proof that the majority of people here are supporters, not haters.

Mexico Supreme Court Strikes Down Marriage Ban
The ruling effectively changes Oaxaca’s civil code to state that marriage takes place “between two people,” instead of between a man and woman. The court ruled in favor of three same-sex couples who sued the state of Oaxaca for the right to marry. The ruling does not immediately eliminate marriage equality bans in other Mexican states, but it does set a legal precedent to begin challenging statewide marriage bans. While many Mexican states still have marriage bans on the books, in 2010 the nation’s capital, Mexico City, began serving gay and lesbian couples with marriage licenses. Shortly thereafter, the Supreme Court ruled that marriages performed in Mexico City must be recognized by every other state in the country, due to a constitutional clause that requires states to recognize contracts performed in other jurisdictions.

It is crazy to think that after this episode of Ellen aired in 1997, they cancelled the show and Ellen received a ton of backlash. This gives younger generations hope when looking at television today and the characters featured. We are moving forward folks. We are becoming more accepting and opening up a world to allow us just to live and be.

That doesn’t mean there is still work to do, but I believe our youth will build a stronger world based on love instead of fear and oppression.
